Missionaries

Drew and I both met up at the end of our days and found that we had a similar frustration: American missionaries. I would like to share my experience (with nothing exagerated) that I have to demonstrate the all too common experience we have had with American missionaries living here. These experiences have, I will admit, caused within me a lot of bitterness.

I went to drop something off at a missionary's house (someone I had never met). On my way, I suddenly found myself in a very wealthy neighborhood (where all the missionaries live). I knocked on a door and found myself face to face with a woman who greeted me with her all-too-well groomed dog. After dropping off my package, I decided to make a little small talk and ask the lady how long she had been here (her words in italics).

"15 years." she replied.

"Oh wow." I said. "We have only been here since August, but we have really enjoyed our time here."

"Really, well, I hate it here."

"Uh. Excuse me?"

"Yes, I hate it here. But I wake up every morning and the Lord gives me strength to make it through each day."

"Oh. Wow."

"Yeah, I could pack everything up today and leave forever, never even looking back."

Silence.

"The only thing that keeps me here is that I have to take care of 150 prison kids."

"Wow, thats a lot of work I bet."

"Yeah, speaking of which, I should probably get going."

"Ok. Well thanks, and maybe I'll see you around."

Does this frustrate anyone else? The fact that there are too many missionaries who live and work overseas who have this attitude? Ugh. It makes me sick.

That is very disturbing and surprising! Why would someone stay if they hated so much? Doesn't make any sense...but glad you are there and loving on the people and enjoying every minute!

I guess that perfectly explains why Corey and I have yet to become friends with American missionaries here. It´s pretty frustrating to see missionaries here living in a bubble. You and Drew really encouraged Corey and me. I admire and respect the way you guys came here and became a part of your community the way you have. I love reading your blog, Ann! We need to get together again sometime. We´d love to come to your house sometime when you´re free.
