Day of the Dead
The past few days have been a celebration of "Dia de los Muertos" and "Todos Santos." These are two big holidays where the dead are believed to come back. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get out of the city for the day or go to a house of someone celebrating the holidays. However, I did go to the cemetery to see all the people cleaning the graves of their loved ones and putting fresh flowers out. It was quite the spectacle to see all these graves. There was a large part of the cemetery that was fancy mausoleums. Then there were walls and walls of graves (pictures below). And in the very back of the cemetery was the plot for those who didn't have enough money to buy a gravesite. There were crosses and small plaques indicating the name of the deceased. These sites are only for 5 years, then the remains of the bodies are burned and discarded. There was once again the stark difference between the rich and the poor.
